The University will soon see lots of changes, as several major construction initiatives are scheduled to begin during the summer. According to University President Walter Harrison, the most dramatic changes will be occurring on the residential side of campus; however, numerous plans are scheduled to start around the entire campus.

This will include the completion of the brand new freshman residence: Hawk Hall. Harrison said, "the new residence will hold 208 students; it will be a beautiful building."

In the fall, sophomore Rebecca Tyrrell will become one of the first Resident Assistants (RA) in Hawk Hall. Tyrrell said, "I'm really looking foward to [being] on the new staff ... It's a great opportunity and I'm really excited to be a part of it."

The area in between the Commons and Hawk Hall will be the site of a major construction project that will be called Alumni Plaza. The plaza will feature landscaping as well as tables and chairs, that according to Harrison, "... create a plaza that will be a vibrant area for first-year students." In addition to Alumni Plaza, the adjacent Hawk's Nest is scheduled for an extensive renovation.

Hawk's Nest will now be renamed Hawk Zone and will feature an athletic theme, including large screen televisions that will show University and national sporting events.

The renovation will include the addition of a new kitchen, including a large brick pizza oven. The renovation will also include the addition of large dining area outside. Harrison described the current configuration as a "tired facility." Hawk Zone will sell fast food from 2 p.m. to midnight.

The Hog River Bridge (fondly referred to as "the Bridge") will also feature a face-lift. According to Harrison, the bridge will feature new lighting, wooden slats and metal railings.

Renovations are also scheduled to start on some of the older buildings of the University. A and C Complexes will also undergo the same renovation that B and D Complexes benefited from last summer. This renovation includes renovated bathrooms, changes in the layout and new heating and air conditioning units. In July, ground breaking will begin on the new Performing Arts Center (PAC). The PAC is scheduled to be complete in fall of 2008.

In addition, Harrison said that the University would continue to try to update sidewalks and classrooms throughout the campus.

Harrison also remarked that the dramatic updates on the residential side of campus will cause returning students to be "surprised and actually a little jealous."
