Vice President of Student Affairs J. Lee Peters states that he wants "to make sure that all of our students living off campus recognize that the law has been strengthened against underage drinking, specifically holding the people who have domain over the space where the drinking occurs responsible."

Some students see the amendment as an invasion of privacy. They feel as though their property is their private sphere which should not be infringed upon. In some cultural households, it is common for children to drink in moderation with their parents, especially during meals. This helps to promote responsible drinking in minors. The updated law, however, helps to reinforce the fact that these people are indeed minors and should not be drinking.

If students are caught breaking this law, both the person supplying the alcohol and person consuming it could have to pay over $200. A second time offense could put the person supplying in jail. Peters reinforces that he wants "all of our students to be safe and not to be arrested."

Sophomore Dan Orgrodnik remarks, "This law could become controversial if police use it as leverage for other things that they may want to check. But as with any law it only becomes a problem if it gets abused."

Public Act 06-112 is a revision of the previous underage drinking law. It makes underage drinking illegal in both the public and private sphere.

i think this is pathetic, i understand that there are more accidents and fatalities with minors, but maybe there should be a law enforced that if they are given a breathalyzer test and they go over a certain number THEN i can understand but if a teen is drinking responsibly why punish everyone for the idiots mistakes?!
